Šipan is long-stretched island surrounded with several Elafiti
islands, divided from the coast with 1500 km wide Koločep Chanel. It
covers an area of 16.5 km2 and is about 17 km away from
Dubrovnik. Each of two bays on the Island has its settlement named
same as the bay: Luka Šipanska and Suđurađ. Suđurađ has wary
important harbor where car-ferry can board. 5km long road, called
‘Motorway’, between these two settlements leads across beautiful
large fertile valleys and vineyards.
There are about 30 churches, mostly left in ruins, spread across the
island dating back from the middle ages. The island’s exceptional
beauty attracted many noble families from Dubrovnik in 15 and 16
century to build their summer residences there. In Luka Šipanska,
the Sorkočević family build their residence. There is also a 15th
century Gothic palace for the Rector. In Suđurađ, directly in front
of the harbor, lies the renaissance fortress of the family Stjepović-Skočibuha,
build in 1529.
Story!
The
ruins of the Dubrovnik Archbishop’ summer residence is also on the
island. Inside these ruins, on the frieze covered by the 16th
century wall paintings, one can still make out several portraits,
amongst which is great Michelangelo’s portrait. It seems that he was
special friend with Ludovico Beccadelli (1501-1572), the famous
Itaian writer, poet and theologian who was became Archbishop of
Dubrovnik at the time. In his letters to Michelangelo, which are
extant, the Bishop expresses open dislike of Dubrovnik and his wish
to have his friend with him on the Island to keep him company.
