Lopud lies between
Koločep and Šipan. It is 50 minutes boat drive distant from
Dubrovnik and
has an area of 4,63 km2; the highest point is
Polacica at 216 meters. On one of the two Island’s bays is placed
the only settlement on the Island named also Lopud. From there,
pathway across the valley leads to the point due to which this
Island is loved and famous for. On the other side of Lopud lies
miraculous, almost one kilometer long sandy beach called Šunj with
knee deep water reaching as far as 100 meters of the coast. If
you're too lazy to walk across the Island there is also a sandy
beach in the vary settlement.
Apart from all the
natural beauties that adorn this Island, Lopud is covered with
things to see that are reminders of its long existence as
beeing a settlement; Lopud used to be
economically most developed Elafiti Island and also the cradle of
Dubrovnik’s seafarers.Today
on Lopud you can see numerous remains of early-medieval churches,
summer manors and fortifications.

Sights!
Visit a Francisian
monastery from 1483 with a cloister and a defence tower with walls.
The monastery holds many valuable art works in its church of St.
Mary of Spilica, with works of Pietra da Giovanni, Nikola
Božidarević, Girolama da Santacroce, Bassana and many others. You
can also visit the church of Our Lady of Šunj which is a cultural
monument with many valuable paintings. |
