Lokrum is a
small island situated in front of the Old City and it takes only 10
minutes boat ride to reach this easy approachable isolation. Regular
taxi boat services are disposable throughout the whole day,
departing from the Dubrovnik Old Port every 30 minutes forth and
back.
We could say
that the whole island Lokrum is circled with
rocky cliffy beaches.
The lack of classic sandy beaches is more than compensated with a
stunning nature with whom this island is blessed with. There is a
FKK section
and, can you imagine, a Lokrum dead sea, suitable for small children
to bath in.
About Lokrum
The first
written record of the island is dated from 1023, when a Benedictine
monastery was built on the island. One of the islands most famous
visitors was Richard the Lion Heart who was shipwrecked here on his
return from the crusades in 1192. As a sign of gratitude he donated
the funds for the construction of a church in Dubrovnik. Through the
centuries different plants and herbs were collected on the island, a
tradition started by the Benedictine monks.
One day Lokrum
exploration would be the only logical solution thus there is so much
to see. The island is a natural resort protected by the Croatian
Academy of Art and Science. On the island there is a Botanic garden
with tropical and subtropical plants. On the highest peak there is a
Fort Royal built in a shape of five pointed star by French army in
1806; it gives a magnificent view of Dubrovnik, Cavtat and the
island itself. Walking through pathways you can easily reach the old
Benedictine monastery preserved and partly restored into the
Maximilian of Habsburg palace in 19th century; now serves as a
restaurant and café bar. |
